Overview

Ola was an all-day café for the kitesurf crowd in Mykonos. Breakfast ran from nine, tacos from two until eleven at night.

The name, the logo and the palette came with the brand. In 2024 I designed three menus and wrote their taglines.

A menu can joke as long as nobody has to hunt for a price.

Three menus

Brunch & Coffee and Cocktails & Tacos are printed on A3, two pages each. The wine and spirits list is a narrow 175 × 420 mm card, built around its price columns: by the glass or the shot, and by the bottle.

The taglines

The owners wrote the dishes and their descriptions, Scramble Mania and Kitesurf Fuel among them. I wrote the taglines around them, starting under the logo on the breakfast page: “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf!”

The spirits get one each: “Let the fun be-gin!” for gin, “Life is short, take the shot!” for tequila.

A line also runs down the middle of three pages. On the brunch menu it is handwritten, “let the sea, set you free” and “happiness comes in waves”. On the cocktails page it curves like a wave: “where there is wind, there is a way!”

The design decision

The copy jokes; the layout doesn’t. Every item follows the same order (name, description, price), so a guest can smile at Avo-riffic Toast and still find its price at a glance.
